I first heard of Lara through my boyfriend, now
husband. He said I would make a perfect Lara Croft. I said, who?
He showed me the games and I was captivated by the character. I was
first intrigued because she had brown hair and eyes like me. Those aren't
exactly popular stats for white women. But I stayed interested because of
her attitude. She keeps her independence yet remains feminine. She
wears practical clothing, more or less, for her adventures. (She's not
practically naked.) She is one of the few female characters that can be
strong and competent without either acting like a man or using sex. I went
to ComicCon as her at the urging of my husband. The comments ranged from,
"a poor excuse for Lara Croft", to "hey you're Laura Ashcroft -
right?", to "wow can I get a picture." (The last one was my
favorite.) Being dressed like Lara gave me the courage to ask the teenager who
made the first comment if he wanted to say it again to my face. He didn't.
I like music, theater and dance. I haven't done much dancing
since I had surgery on both my knees last December 29th. I do not raid
tombs but I think Lara's spirit translates into any aspect of life. She
has courage and conducts herself with honor. Those qualities are admirable
and unfortunately not overly present in society today. Lara inspires me,
as I thinks she inspires others, to be the best I can be in whatever I do.
